Sheets attempts to retrace Rinko Kawauchi’s steps in this world by reassembling and re-editing her films into a reinvented whole. Cinematic to the core, the randomly selected sequences of contact sheets offer a veritable time lapse, a resurrection of moments from the artist’s personal history, immortalized in some of her most significant publications. The book’s fold-outs mark intervals in this rhythmic crescendo. They contribute, as with a magnifying glass, to new, spontaneous connections between images. It’s all there, fragment by fragment, the elements and motifs of a primitive cosmogony of varied affective nuances with their connotations of transcendental immanence – a palimpsest of the everyday that Kawauchi assembles with astonishing ease, as if the flow of juxtaposed images were as natural to him as his own biological journey through life.
