“Partying is political”. This slogan is hardly convincing today. The dancefloor, taken over by capitalism, is becoming watered down in its ambience. Power mobilizes the power of the party to celebrate a fantasized national identity, and at the same time represses those who escape it. And yet, contemporary festivities survive as minor-mode politics: spaces for self-reinvention, alternative social geometries, ephemeral forms of commonality and joyful breeding grounds for struggle. From the intimate to the collective, this book is as much a cartography of these festive paradoxes as it is an ode to the party as a zone to be defended against the daytime colonization of our sociabilities.
