It emphasises the dichotomy of such a masculine sport of aggression and prowess mixed with tactility intimacy and vulnerability capturing briefs instant of tenderness that this sport can foster between two men.
There’s a genuine intimacy to two men on the mat together; with its yielding, almost gentle softness it carves a space for physical proximity and intimacy that feels rare. But the connection is fragile, a tension that’s always in danger of being pushed to breaking point. To step off of the mat is to reconfigure the way the body moves, feels, is perceived, even as someone else’s sweat clings to it.
