WILLIAM KLEIN
CONTACTS

The eagerly awaited new edition of William Klein’s legendary book, Contacts.

Presented in a new format, 70 works, including 30 unpublished, reveal the talent and daring of this iconic photographer. Robert Delpire’s preface offers a fascinating introduction to the work of one who was also his close friend.

Contacts is the result of long years of work and questioning on the part of the artist around the contact sheet. His “painted contacts” testify to a desire to create a graphic bridge between painting and photography.

Contacts first appeared in 2008 by Delpire. This new edition, augmented by 30 unpublished works chosen by the artist, is presented in an elegant format sure to satisfy photography enthusiasts.

Born in New York in 1928, William Klein is a multidisciplinary artist whose practice has revolutionized photography, especially in fashion and street photography. He lived and worked in Paris from the end of the 1940s. In 1954, he went to New York where he created an avant-garde photographic journal. This work, New York, Life is good & good for you, was awarded the Nadar Prize in 1956. Breaking with tradition, the photographer immediately imposes a new, violent, graphic style, blending black humor, social criticism, satire and poetry. He is represented in France by Galerie Polka (Paris) and Le Réverbère (Lyon). His work has been exhibited around the world, and several major museums have dedicated retrospectives to him.
