Filming the city: Vivian Maier and the cinematographic gestures of photographers.
A selection of films by Vivian Maier and avant-garde films from the 1920s to the 1960s, proposed and presented by Christa Blümlinger, critic and teacher-researcher.
These documentaries put Vivian Maier’s discovery as a filmmaker into perspective: they present the gaze of photographers who have explored the movement of large cities through the medium of film. These gestures are now part of the history of avant-garde cinema.
List of films: Charles Sheeler and Paul Strand, Manhattan / 1921; Hans Richter, Vormittagsspuk, 1928; Helen Levitt, James Agee and Janice Loeb, In the Street, 1948; Laszlo Moholy-Nagy, Großstadtzigeuner 1932; Laszlo Moholy-Nagy, The New Architecture and the London Zoo 1936; Agnès Varda, L’Opéra Mouffe, 1958; Peter Emmanuel Goldman, Pestilent City, 1965; Robert Frank, Conversations in Vermont, 1969.
