Through more than 500 images by photographers including Jane Evelyn Atwood, Sammy Baloji, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Luc Delahaye, Dorothea Lange, Martin Parr and Wiktoria Wojciechowska, this book brings us face to face with some of the most significant events in contemporary history, revealing the decisive role played by photography in shaping our perceptions.

From the struggle for civil rights to geopolitical upheaval, from technological advances to major cultural movements, via the daily lives of strangers – sometimes violent, sometimes poetic – each image reveals, in a poignant, even tragic way, the destiny of a humanity grappling with the inexorable march of a History that often overtakes or crushes it.
