This catalogue unveils a collection of photographs and drawings by the artist, documents and installation views that bear witness to Carreyn’s obsessions with the female body and pop occultism, symbolism and surrealism.
For an exhibition at the Frac Champagne-Ardenne, the artist took over the entire exhibition space and specially designed an installation bringing together nearly a hundred works on paper. Using a wide variety of production techniques and modes of presentation, the artist succeeded in producing an immersive work that immersed visitors entirely in a highly personal universe. Particularly interested in old and/or rudimentary reproduction techniques, Julien Carreyn favours drawing as a creative process in an attempt to generate a new language. A bulimic and erudite artist, it is through the fusion of multiple references that he produces works with a deceptively old-fashioned appearance, mixing abstraction with figuration, quoting Bresson’s cinema, recalling Man Ray’s position on eroticism, appropriating Surrealist themes, associating a certain fragmented realism with subconscious images and dreams, etc.
Published following Julien Carreyn’s solo exhibition at the Frac Champagne-Ardenne, Reims, from 13 May to 14 August 2011.
