The invasion of Lebanon by the Israeli army in 1982 marked the beginning of the “Peace in Galilee” operation. The photojournalist Yan Morvan was sent there by the Sipa agency for Newsweek. From 1982 to 1985, he tells the story of the war in Lebanon as he experienced it and during which he almost lost his life several times… He tells the story of a country torn apart, without ever taking sides or favoring one of the actors in this drama, in order to render as faithfully as possible the key episodes of this major conflict. At the same time, he gives us his poignant reportage made with his large format camera on the “green line”, the no-man’s land that crosses Beirut and separates the belligerents. War with a 4×5 inch view camera is against the grain: the subject poses, time stops, a rare moment on the front line. The combatants pose for the ephemeral glory of a portrait, the civilians still present in the battered city to tell the world that they are still there and that they could not be anywhere else, with a sinister pile of ruins around them…
