Last Christmas (of Ceausescu)

At the end of 2019, an EU resolution was passed, calling on the Romanian state to legally assume the turning point. While other Communist dictatorships were largely overthrown peacefully in 1989, the Romanian revolution ended in bloodshed. To this day, the dead have not been atoned for.

In a dazzling visual choreography, artist and photographer Anton Roland Laub recounts the fall of Romanian dictator Ceaușescu. During his flight on December 22, 1989, Nicolae and Elena Ceaușescu were arrested near Târgoviște, precisely where Vlad the Impaler, aka Dracula, once resided. On Christmas Day 1989, the couple are sentenced to death in a show trial. The death sentence was carried out immediately. On the second day of Christmas, images of the execution were broadcast around the world.
