A mythical figure of photojournalism, Gilles Caron became famous for his icons of May 68. He is also the author for the Gamma agency of one of the greatest reports in contemporary history: the Battle of Bogside, in Northern Ireland, which pits Catholic civilians against the Royal Ulster Police, Protestant. This sudden explosion of violence in Derry, from August 12 to 14, 1969, marked the beginning of the civil war. Gilles Caron photographed the events day and night and delivered a unique and precious masterly reportage that captures the breathlessness of the revolt. His images were considered at the time as historical documents. Today, they constitute a unique testimony of this turning point in Irish history.
By revisiting his archives and revealing previously unpublished images, this book plunges us into the heart of the conflict, fifty years later. At a time when the Brexit threatens a return to a border between the north and south of Ireland – and violence – this extraordinarily modern work resonates more strongly than ever.
