I on the Road

I on the Road – Weather Camera Self-portraits is the first book by Finnish artist Tatu Gustafsson and consists of 200 self-portraits taken with a weather camera. When Gustafsson started making self-portraits in 2012, he was looking for a different way to make photographs and wanted to challenge the authorship issues associated with traditional photography. Discovering that Finnish weather and traffic cameras take pictures every 12 minutes and store them online for 24 hours, Gustafsson embarked on a journey across the country, placing himself in front of these outdoor cameras. The result is haunting images that capture the essence of solitude. Using over 700 roadside cameras scattered across Finland, Gustafsson accepted the lack of control inherent in the process. Spending one week a month in his car, he crossed the country, becoming a ghostly presence amidst the tranquil landscapes captured by the automatic cameras.
