In order to understand the phenomenon of the Lithuanian photographer Algirdas Šeškus, we should not focus on his main career, exemplified by his long list of exhibitions and publications. His career evolved in a rather complicated way, but his name evokes a crucial Soviet period in the development of Lithuanian photography. Šeškus’ entire creative work seems to have no direction: it lacks specific themes or a clearly expressed authorial approach. He takes the position of a passive observer, and evaluates critically photography’s representation of metaphorical reality, balanced between artistic nihilism and the creative act of fetishism.
