Through one hundred and nine photographs, taken between 1962 and 1971, in Czechoslovakia (Bohemia, Moravia and Slovakia), Romania, Hungary, France and Spain, Josef Koudelka delivers the unique testimony of a vanished world. Fascinated by the culture of the Gypsies, and seeking to capture the meaning of their life, he delivers us portraits of overwhelming humanity and authenticity. His approach, neither documentary nor ethnographic, takes place in a deeply intimate setting, and, thanks to the benevolence of a unique gaze, the result is images imbued with a strong symbolism, a strange power.
