Garçon de Café is a book of photographs and texts created by photographer Yves Drillet. It shows young people in their precarious work uniforms. It’s about how they manage to cope, despite a job that’s far removed from their aspirations. Coping means looking for a way out of the institution of work. It’s a form of resistance that may be passive, but that’s just waiting to blossom.
The portrait photos are accompanied by a non-fiction text, La peau et l’uniforme. This text recounts a day in the life of several young people doing odd jobs, set in Rennes on a rainy Saturday. It is based on documentary material: some thirty interviews with these young people.
Contacted by the photographer, sociologist Vanessa Pinto wrote a text for the book. A specialist in youth, education and work, she has worked in particular on the theme of student employment as a vector of social inequality in higher education, and on precarious employment in the service sector (fast food, call centers, socio-cultural activities).
The book is designed by graphic artist Cécile Binjamin. Specializing in the creation of printed objects, she has already worked with the photographer on the graphic design of his first book, in 2015: Next of Kin.
