On the occasion of the exhibition « L’essence du visible » at the Henri Cartier-Bresson Foundation (2019) and the publication of Wright Morris’ monograph, Fragments de temps brings together Wright Morris’ writings on photography translated into French for the first time.

This book allows us to discover this author, who is little known in France, as well as a founding reflection in the history of the medium. Wright Morris (1910-1998) was one of the first to experiment with the dialogue between text and image in his creations, starting in the 1940s. Wright Morris’s essays cover a wide range of subjects and periods: from Eugène Atget’s historical photographs to NASA’s space photographs, Solomon D. Butcher’s portraits of pioneers in the American West, Susan S. S.’s writings and the work of her husband. Butcher’s portraits of pioneers in the American West, the writings of Susan Sontag and Henry James, as well as through his own photographs and writings.
