In 2022, a painting, Untitled (2013), entered the collections of the Musée d’Art Moderne thanks to a generous donation. It is from this painting that the exhibition – the artist’s first in a French museum – has taken shape. Created between 2013 and 2015, the five paintings on show are part of a very short period during which Guyton was particularly interested in the colour black. Four of them were created from a single Photoshop file composed exclusively of black: the printed image competes with white, its reserve space. Within each canvas, an ambiguous relationship is established between figure and background and, more broadly, between the works and the wall on which they are hung. The book includes texts by Julia Garimoth and Stéphanie Moisdon.
