A creative tribute to one of East Africa’s most iconic musical genres.
Benga – A Signature Genre from Kenya is dedicated to a timeless Kenyan musical genre. Revisiting this fascinating benga movement, the edition consists of a screen-printed publication including articles in English and French, plus a vinyl featuring six tracks in high definition with a download code.
Featuring articles by renowned Kenyan journalists such as Ondiso Madete and Emmanuel Mwendwa, as well as the reflections of international experts on the genre such as Douglas Paterson, and the opinions of modern Kenyan musicians such as Ayub Ogada, the magazine reveals the fascinating story of the benga epic right up to the present day. It also includes exclusive period photos, as well as creative contemporary illustrations by Atelier U-Zehn celebrating the spirit of benga.
The magazine is accompanied by a compilation vinyl featuring rare recordings by former benga glories (Daniel Owino Misiani, George Ramogi and the Migori Superstars), revisited by contemporary artists such as Jaakko Eino Kalevi, Africaine 808, Nik Weston and Rudy’s Midnight Machine. The vinyl sleeve was designed exclusively by Berlin-based artist Olka Osadzińska, an internationally renowned illustrator.
