On the occasion of his exhibition at La Filature, Stephen Dock carried out an immersion photographic work in the former Mulhouse prison a few months after its definitive closure. 36 brings together thirty-six images from the same film, edited in the original order in which they were taken. The work, constrained within itself, evokes the experience of confinement in a single space, the “individual walk”. By photographing it compulsively, the author takes hold of this place and confronts its walls.
Born in 1988, Stephen Dock quickly confronted the field with a first subject in Venezuela in 2008. His photography has taken him successively to Nepal, the West Bank, Syria, Iraq, Northern Ireland, the United Kingdom, Mali, the Central African Republic, Lebanon, Eritrea and Indian Kashmir. His work focuses on a visual investigation of our ability to construct and evolve in an urban, cultural or political environment. He is particularly attached to the traces that all types of fractures, real or latent conflicts, classes or states of war leave on our contemporaries.
