Vernissage with the photographer on Thursday, October 3 at 6pm.
“For me, making an image is a militant act, and if I’ve always been there for those in the worst position to defend themselves, I’ve always lived with them for a very long time, becoming a fighter for their cause. Neither complacency nor voyeurism, but a sense of urgency, responsibility and mission. My photos are about commitment.” Jean-Louis Courtinat
Take a look back at Jean-Louis Courtinat’s career and work by visiting the retrospective exhibition at the Salpêtrière and discovering Louons-maintenant les plus fragiles, the book published on September 19 by Editions Delpire, which covers the many facets of forty years of social photography.
With a sense of humility, the photographer has never ceased to record the ‘tiny lives’ of unimportant, weakened people, those who are not totally aware, and those who are dying. In a moving gallery of portraits, he shows us how great the ‘most fragile’ are, and how much they have to teach us. These photographs and the accompanying two-voice commentary pose profoundly human and contemporary questions to our festive and wealthy societies.
