We’re delighted to be back to Arles this year, with the publication of four new books and the launch of a new collection, Les Carnets, co-published with the Institut pour la photographie des Hauts-de-France.
Exhibition at Croisière
No name on the back, no nationality, no date… Identity photos, large-format photos in studio poses, retouched and pastelized portraits… This book was born with the discovery by Jean-Marie Donat of the photographic archive of Studio Rex, located in the working-class district of Belsunce in Marseille, which is essentially made up of photos of migrants from North and West Africa.
The juxtaposition, selection and sequencing of the photographs, together with the testimonies gathered by the novelist Souâd Belhaddad, offer several overlapping points of view, blurring the boundary between the public and the private, between the history of these men and women in transit and that of a country.
Exhibition at the espace Van Gogh
This book presents some of the finest scrapbooks by filmmakers, who are also photographers, poets and illustrators. It takes us on a journey to the origins of their films, providing access to private documents that reveal the intimacy at the very heart of the creative process. It also includes personalities who, in their own way, contributed to the creation of films, such as William S. Burroughs, writer and screenwriter.
Agnès Varda. La Pointe Courte
Exhibition at the Cloître Saint-Trophime
Agnès Varda produced La Pointe-Courte, a radical film in 1954, alternating a graphic and realistic style that did not escape the notice of discerning cinephiles of the time. The film’s artistic independence broke with the codes of the cinema of its time, to the point of being described as a precursor of the Nouvelle Vague.
delpire & co publishes La Pointe-Courte, the first opus in the new collection Les Carnets, co-published with the Institut pour la photographie des Hauts-de-France, as well as Expo 54, a reconstruction of the artist’s first exhibition in her courtyard, rue Daguerre in Paris.
Exhibition at Monoprix
Four of our books published in 2022 and 2023 have been selected for the Prix du Livre 2023. They will be available for consultation throughout the festival at Monoprix.
