Les Carnets, a new collection co-published with the Institut pour la photographie

delpire & co and the Institut pour la photographie des Hauts-de-France are launching a new collection, Les Carnets, conceived by the Institut as part of its program to promote its photographers’ archives.

The first issues of the collection, dedicated to Agnès Varda, Expo54 and La Pointe Courte, des photographies au film, respectively accompany the two eponymous traveling exhibitions: Expo54, presented at the Institut pour la photographie in 2021, then at the Finnish Museum of photography in Helsinki in 2022, and La Pointe Courte, des photographies au film, presented at the Rencontres d’Arles this summer.

These works were published under the direction of Anne Lacoste, director of the Institut pour la photographie des Hauts-de-France, and Carole Sandrin, curator of the photographic archives, with the assistance of Elisa Magnani, in charge of studies and inventories, and the kind collaboration of Rosalie Varda. Editorial direction was provided by Emmanuelle Kouchner, art direction by Line Martin-Célo, and they were printed on the Art & Caractère press in Lavaur.

Exhibition at the Cloître Saint-Trophime, Rencontres d’Arles 2023

With La Pointe-Courte, Agnès Varda produced a radical film in 1954, alternating a graphic and realistic style that did not escape the notice of discerning cinephiles of the time. The film’s artistic independence broke with the codes of the cinema of its time, to the point of being described as a precursor of the Nouvelle Vague movement.

Exhibition Viva Varda at the Cinémathèque française, October 2023

In June 1954, Agnès Varda opened the doors of her house rue Daguerre in Paris to present a selection of portraits, nudes and still lifes in her courtyard, right on the walls. Her street and its neighbors are her favorite subjects, including Alexander Calder, whom she met through Jean Vilar, as well as Hans Hartung and Brassaï. Visitors discover striking images that herald the aesthetics of an entire career.
