A self-described neurotic collector, Barbara Iweins is a Belgian photographer who began her artistic career in Amsterdam. Drawing her inspiration from literature – Edouard Levé – and contemporary art – Sophie Calle, Christian Boltanski, Jan Saudek – she is fascinated by human vulnerability and has never ceased to push back the boundaries of intimacy.
After an eleventh harrowing move, Barbara Iweins embarked on a singular work of introspection: photographing the 12,795 objects in her home one by one, indexing and classifying them by color, material, frequency of use… Light-hearted and tinged with self-mockery, her monumental Katalog project is nonetheless a veritable work of visual anthropology.
