In this definitive retrospective, a rich collection of celebrated work by British photographer Dennis Morris is brought together for the first time. From his early documentary projects exploring race and identity in 1970s Britain to his iconic portraits of music legends, the book also includes previously unpublished images that breathe new vitality into Morris’s already remarkable visual narrative. Born in Jamaica, Morris arrived in England at the age of five and, at nine, joined the photo club at his local church in Dalston, which sparked his passion for photography. At just 11, one of his photographs of a London demonstration made the front page of the Daily Mirror. As a teenager, Morris played hooky to wait for Bob Marley before a sound check at London’s Speakeasy Club; Marley invited the young photographer to follow him on tour to take pictures, marking the beginning of a lasting friendship. Morris went on to become the Sex Pistols’ official photographer, and his adventures in 1970s reggae and punk laid the foundations for a decades-long career in photography, art direction, design and music.
