Fushikaden

Issei Suda (1940-2019) is one of the major figures of post-war Japanese photography. On the occasion of his first exhibition in France, the Centre d’art GwinZegal is reissuing Fushikaden, his most emblematic book published in 1978. After working for several years as a photographer with an avant-garde theater troupe, in 1970 he set out to criss-cross rural Japan, with its traditional festivals and cultural events, to photograph his compatriots and capture the mutations of a country gripped by unprecedented growth. Far from Tokyo and the big cities that fascinated photographers at the time, Suda captured moments of everyday life with subtlety and love: faces, attitudes and details that sketched the meeting of the old world with the new.
