Dream in the Rhythm

Bringing together nearly 80 works from MoMa’s collection and archives, this unique volume establishes multisensory links between images and poems, music and performances. Photographs, scores and films by artists such as Dawoud Bey, Mark Bradford, Roy DeCarava and Lee Friedlander are juxtaposed with striking texts by authors such as Amiri Baraka, Nikki Giovanni and Langston Hughes. Published to coincide with the exhibition Artist’s Choice: Grace Wales Bonner-Spirit Movers, this publication is a deeply personal reflection on and around modern Black expression.

Grace Wales Bonner is the founder and artistic director of Wales Bonner. While she considers herself primarily a researcher, her practice extends to curation, filmmaking and editing. In 2019, she curated her first institutional exhibition, A Time for New Dreams, at the Serpentine Gallery, London.

By blending different papers and sporting a gilded top binding, the object bears witness to the richness of the works it presents.
