Bringing together the artist’s photographs, found archival documents, hand-drawn sketches, oral histories, and excerpts from literature, Lay Her Down Upon Her Back examines the history of medical maltreatment and the unequal power relations between doctors and patients through a type of photography in which the evidence itself plays the role of symptom. Indeed, in photography as in hysteria, it is the surface that carries meaning and depth, providing the space on which meaning is played out.
