Lux in Tenebris

Lux in tenebris is an unprecedented and intimate sea voyage. The author, Vincent Jendly, a photographer, embarked on five merchant marine cargo ships to experience his ambivalent relationship with water, developed after having escaped drowning as a child. Here, in the strange world of large cargo ships, night is hostile: in the deepest darkness, when the weather is overcast and the ship disappears completely, nothing distinguishes it from the water, and the invisible sea becomes even more abyssal.

On his first trip, when Vincent Jendly sees an indeterminate glow on the horizon, he sees himself opening his eyes after his accident, in the bright light of his loved ones watching over him, and he sees life in death. The result of these often uncomfortable, sometimes dangerous journeys is a cathartic work, a challenge to the darkness, an ode to life.
